My art is inspired by electron microscope images of life forms, especially diseases. I am drawn to an examination of these cell forms which appear to possess a universal attraction for the viewer. Through the beauty of their abstracted elements I construct images which are mysterious yet reveal something of the basic elements of all life. I aim to provoke the viewer’s perceptions of what we should consider pleasing to the eye. In presenting a series of subtle and alluring images I entice the audience into a consideration of the hidden taboo of disease. My work invites an inquiring response from the viewer, communicating ideas of beauty versus disgust, fragility versus strength and the visible versus the invisible.

My working methods are diverse and include printmaking, painting, photography, installation and three dimensional work constructed from hand-made paper. The delicacy of this material helps to convey ideas of fragility and impermanence and reflects life’s imperfections.

I staged a performance/event at St. Luke’s Church, Liverpool in October 2003 when 1,000 decorated origami peace cranes were thrown from the tower for the audience to collect. These cranes were made by myself and members of the public and carried images of diseases associated with the recent war in Iraq, namely Smallpox, Anthrax, Cholera and Typhoid.

Recent exhibitions have included a site specific solo show at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as well as the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Both shows consisted of images based on current research taking place on site into cures for illnesses such as A.I.D.S., blood clots and strokes.
