Joey Kruger was born in Eldoret, Kenya and moved to South Africa in 1964. She was educated at the Johannesburg School of Art, Ballet and Music (1969 - 1971). She then completed her studies in art at the Johannesburg College of Art (1972 - 1974) where she obtained her National Diploma in Fine Arts and Design.
